Using wireless at UC San Diego

Linux and MacOS users

Setup

Each participant is given an account. Account is on the registration card (insert in your badge)
and is identified by (login) and passphrase (pass).

Execute the steps below once.
IMPORTANT: You will need to create non-empty passphrase where indicated.

  1. Download SI2011 ssh keys:
    Use name si2011u and password from your registration card. Save file as userkey on your laptop.
    IMPORTANT: file permissions should be -rw-------
    chmod 600 userkey
  2. Change the passphrase on userkey via:
    ssh-keygen -p -f userkey
    Enter old passphrase:     <-- enter pass from your login info card
    Key has comment 'user'
    Enter new passphrase (empty for no passphrase):     <-- enter new NON-EMPTY passphrase, you will need to remember it
    Enter same passphrase again:    
    Your identification has been saved with the new passphrase.
  3. This step is needed only if you will be using oolite or kryptonite cluster.
    • login to puzzle using ssh and the account name from your handout:
      ssh account@puzzle.nbcr.net -i userkey
      you will be asked for a passsphrase, use one you created in a step 3.
    • After you log in, reset password your puzzle's ssh key:
      ssh-keygen -p
      Enter file in which the key is (/home/account/.ssh/id_rsa):     hit enter key to accept default identity key location
      Enter new passphrase (empty for no passphrase):     <-- enter a NON-EMPTY passphrase from step 3
      Enter same passphrase again:    

You will be using the passphrase from steps 3,4 to connect to all the clusters.

  • from your laptop: ssh account@puzzle.nbcr.net
  • from puzzle: ssh -x kryptonite

cluster oolite.calit2.optiputer.net

  • from your laptop: ssh account@puzzle.nbcr.net
  • from puzzle: ssh -x oolite

cluster rocce.ucd.edu

  • from your laptop: ssh account@rocce.ucsd.edu

Windows Users

Setup

If you don't have PuTTY installed, download from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

  1. Download NBCR putty key. Download is user/pass protected. Use name si2011u and password from your registration card.
  2. Change the passphrase on your PuTTY key, see details. You will be using the passphrase to connect to all the clusters.
  3. Access server with PuTTY.
    • open PuTTY
    • enter host name
    • in Conneciton->SSH menu choose Auth and browse for your downloaded key
    • click Open
    • in the new opened window login with the acount name given to you
    • when prompted, give your new passphrase.
  4. This step is needed only if you will be using oolite or kryptonite cluster. After you log in to puzzle.nbcr.net, reset password on your puzzle's ssh key:
    ssh-keygen -p
    Enter file in which the key is (/home/account/.ssh/id_rsa):     hit enter key to accept default identity key location
    Enter new passphrase (empty for no passphrase):     <-- enter a NON-EMPTY passphrase from step 3
    Enter same passphrase again:    

Login

  • from your laptop: open PuTTY connection to puzzle.nbcr.net
  • from puzzle: ssh -x kryptonite

cluster oolite.calit2.optiputer.net

  • from your laptop: open PuTTY connection to puzzle.nbcr.net
  • from puzzle: ssh -x oolite

cluster rocce.ucd.edu

  • from your laptop: open PuTTY connection to rocce.ucsd.edu
